Noah's Ark Similarities to Older Flood Myths Explained [Gilgamesh & Atrahasis]
The story of Noah's Ark in Genesis 6-9 shares similarities with ancient flood stories, legends and myths that are dated older than Noahs Ark such as Gilgamesh and Atrahasis. Why are these stories all so similar? Was there a real Noah's ark? In this video I explore this relationship between ancient flood stories and the Bible.
I've always been fascinated by the idea that Noahs Ark is very similar to several older global flood stories. Including the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh and Akkadian story of the Epic of Atrahasis. In this video I explore why Noah's ark has so much in common with these older flood stories like Atrahasis and the Epic of Gilgamesh. These flood stories were discovered in the British museum in the 1800s and have dramatically changed the way Christians and secular scholars read the story of Noah's Ark in the Bible.
The claims in this video are about the literary writing of the stories themselves, not any events that they may reference. My assumptions are that the writing of the Epic of Atrahasis can be dated accurately to the 18th Century BCE or earlier and that the writing of the Genesis stories happens no earlier than 1500 BCE, but more likely somewhere between 1200-500 BCE.
