In captivity, wolf packs follow a specific structure - with every member of the pack having their own role. This documentary follows wild wolves in Germany, those who have never been in captivity, and looks at how their behavior differs from those we see in our sanctuaries. Follow several wild wolf packs and watch as they hunt, play and fight with each other in the great open wilderness of Germany.

In the towering rain forests along the northern shores of the Pacific, scientists recently discovered a new subspecies of the gray wolf. Unlike its genetic kin anywhere else in the world, this wolf swims, fishes for salmon and roams great distances from island to inlet across both water and rough terrain.

Wolves – some see in them predatory beasts, others romanticize them as mythical creatures. Many are fascinated by the strict hierarchy often described by scientists studying wolves in reserves. But does such a competitive hierarchy also exist in the wild? How do wild wolves live? The film Germany's Wild Wolves shows how similar the social structures of humans and wolves are. It clears up modern myths about a fascinating wild animal which can once again play an important role in Germany's wildlife.

The National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation and its collaborative partners have released a new documentary film, “The Return of Wolves: Isle Royale National Park,” a culmination of a four-year, ongoing initiative that studies how the predator/prey relationship between wolves and moose was re-established on Isle Royale National Park. The corresponding free educational plans in “Lessons from the Wilderness” offer educators in the classroom and homeschool settings the opportunity to teach students about the unique relationship between wolves and moose on Isle Royale National Park and how it alters the ecosystem. This program has lessons for K-12 learners in four age groups, with a curriculum most relevant and appropriate for each grade level.
The wolf is a very intelligent and highly developed animal. The character of many tales, myths and legends, the wolf, on the one hand, is considered a symbol of wisdom, devotion to the family and the ability to fend for oneself, and on the other - the embodiment of bloodthirstiness, greed and cunning. So who is the real wolf? An image from myths and legends or a dangerous animal?

The Rise Of The Black Wolf
A black wolf is a melanistic colour variant of the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Black specimens are recorded among red wolves (Canis lupus rufus), and these color variants are probably still around today.[3] Genetic research from the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California, Los Angeles revealed that wolves with black pelts owe their distinctive coloration to a mutation which occurred in domestic dogs, and was carried to wolves through wolf-dog hybridization. Besides coat color they are normal gray wolves.

From childhood, we're taught to fear and loathe them. Just think back, there's the Big Bad Wolf of the fairy stories, the werewolf in the horror flicks, even Wolverine from X-Men. Evil, dangerous, bloodthirsty beasts. So, how could anyone possibly make friends with a pack of wolves? Good question. And there's only one bloke with the answer. Shaun Ellis is from that rare breed of researchers - part genius, part crazy. He's spent 20 years studying them in the wild. Eating, sleeping - living with wolves - trying to learn their language, finding out what makes them so frightening. It really is hair-raising stuff. No wonder they call him the Wolfman.

In 1926 the last wolf was killed in Yellowstone National Park. For 70 years the top predator was missing and elk, its prey, increased dramatically to over 20,000, turning vast areas of Yellowstone into an ecological disaster zone, browsing down the woody vegetation to almost nothing. In 1995 wolves were reintroduced. Now, 20 years later, the eco-system of the park has turned back into balance.
